Easy Shadows for Effect

Shadows can create drama or add a little mystery to an image but if you've already taken that photo or rendered that image can you then go back and add a shadow?  Absolutely!  You don't even need fancy software or an expensive graphics program.  I'm using Paint Shop Pro 8 in this example. (I really need to upgrade).

Make a selection using the Freehand Selection tool with the feather set to a high number.  Select the area that will remain lit, not the area that will be in shadow.

Now invert your selection.

Using the flood fill tool, fill in the inverted selection with black. Instant shadow!  Told you it was easy!
